DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa health officials reported 17 confirmed measles cases statewide this year as they continue to respond to an outbreak in southern Iowa.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services said Sunday there is evidence of person-to-person spread. Health officials are working with affected families and community leaders to identify illnesses, share information and provide access to vaccinations.
The agency added Sunnyside Grocery, 22422 County Road 63 in Bloomfield, to its list of potential exposure locations. A person with measles visited the store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15, according to Iowa HHS.
People who were at the location during that time should watch for symptoms, including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and a rash.
Measles is highly contagious and can spread to people who are not immune. Anyone who believes they were exposed and develops symptoms should call their health care provider or emergency room before arriving to avoid exposing others, the agency said.
Other previously announced potential exposure locations include Pizza Ranch in Ottumwa on Aug. 14 and JR Feed and Supply in Bloomfield on Aug. 9. Iowa HHS also listed several locations in the Des Moines metro area from July 28, including Natural Grocers in Clive, Vero Health Center and Office Depot in West Des Moines, and Menards stores in Clive and Des Moines.
Officials said people who are unvaccinated or unsure whether they are immune should speak with a health care provider or local public health agency about receiving the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
